The honest answer is that laser engraving works beautifully on a wide range of materials — and fails, sometimes dangerously, on a few others. Knowing which materials can be laser engraved before you design a part saves time, money, and a lot of scrapped stock. Here is how the most common materials behave under a laser, based on the parts we run every week for Los Angeles businesses, artists, and manufacturers.
How Laser Engraving Interacts With Different Materials
A laser does not carve the way a mill does. It delivers concentrated heat to a very small spot, and the material either vaporizes, melts, chars, or fractures at the surface. The result depends less on how hard a material is and more on how it absorbs the laser’s wavelength and how it reacts to heat. CO2 lasers excel on organics — wood, acrylic, leather, paper, glass. Fiber lasers excel on metals. Matching the material to the right laser source is most of the job.
The Best Materials for Laser Engraving
Wood and Plywood
Wood is the classic laser material. It engraves with rich contrast because the surface chars, and it cuts cleanly at reasonable thicknesses. Lighter woods like maple, birch, and alder give the crispest contrast; oily or resinous woods can produce uneven burn marks. Baltic birch plywood is our workhorse for signage, packaging prototypes, and display fixtures. Expect a slight scorch line on cut edges — it can be masked or sanded.
Acrylic
Cast acrylic engraves to a frosted white and cuts with a flame-polished edge, which is why it dominates retail displays, awards, and light-up signage. Extruded acrylic cuts fine but engraves gray and dull, so specify cast acrylic when appearance matters. Polycarbonate looks similar but is a poor laser material — it yellows badly and leaves ragged edges.
Metal
Bare metals need a fiber laser. Steel, stainless, titanium, aluminum, and brass all mark cleanly with permanent, wear-resistant results: serial numbers, QR codes, logos, and data-matrix codes for traceability. Anodized aluminum is the exception — a CO2 laser can ablate the anodized layer to reveal bright silver underneath, which is how most laptop-style engraving is done.
Leather
Genuine leather engraves with a dark, tooled look and cuts cleanly, making it ideal for wallets, straps, patches, and branded goods. Vegetable-tanned leather gives the sharpest contrast. Chrome-tanned leather can smell strongly and produce inconsistent color, so we test a coupon first. Faux leather made with PVC should never go in a laser.
Glass and Stone
Glass does not vaporize — it fractures at the surface, producing a frosted etch. That is exactly what you want for bottles, awards, and drinkware, though the finish is inherently slightly rough. Marble, slate, and granite also etch to a light, high-contrast mark and are popular for plaques and memorials.
Materials We Will Not Laser
PVC and vinyl release chlorine gas that corrodes machines and harms people. Polycarbonate, ABS, and HDPE melt or discolor rather than cutting cleanly. Fiberglass, carbon fiber, and coated or unknown composites can release toxic fumes. If you are not certain what a material is, tell us — we would rather test a small sample than damage a part or a machine.
Preparing Your File
Send vector artwork (AI, DXF, SVG, or PDF) with cut lines and engrave areas clearly separated. High-contrast raster images work for photo engraving, but fine gradients rarely survive.
