SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and AutoCAD are three of the most widely used platforms, but they were built for very different jobs. Pick the wrong one and you can end up with slower design cycles, files your manufacturer cannot use, and rework that costs real money. SolidWorks: The Standard for Mechanical Product Design
SolidWorks is a parametric solid modeler, which means every dimension and feature stays editable throughout the design. Change a wall thickness or a hole diameter and the entire model updates intelligently. That makes it the go-to tool for engineering-grade work: multi-part assemblies, injection-molded housings, sheet metal enclosures, and mechanisms with moving parts.
Its strengths go beyond modeling. SolidWorks produces proper engineering drawings with tolerances and GD&T callouts, runs stress and motion simulations, and exports clean STEP files that mold makers and machine shops expect. The trade-offs are cost and complexity — licenses run into the thousands of dollars per year, and the learning curve is steep. That is why many inventors and small companies hand SolidWorks work to a design service rather than buying a seat themselves.
Fusion 360: Flexible and Budget-Friendly
Fusion 360 packs parametric modeling, freeform sculpting, rendering, and integrated CAM into one cloud-based package at a fraction of the price. For startups and product ideas headed to 3D printing or desktop CNC, it is often all the software you need. Cloud storage makes collaboration and version history painless, and the same file can drive both your prototype and your toolpaths.
Where it falls short is heavy industrial work: very large assemblies, advanced surfacing, and the drawing standards some manufacturers require. It also depends on an internet connection for full functionality, which some shops find limiting.
AutoCAD: The 2D Drafting Workhorse
AutoCAD predates both of the others and remains unmatched for precision 2D work: fabrication layouts, floor plans, electrical schematics, and flat patterns. In our shop, AutoCAD-style DXF files are exactly what drives the laser cutting process — clean vector paths, correct scale, no surprises. AutoCAD does offer 3D tools, but for organic shapes and complex product enclosures it is the wrong instrument; parametric modelers handle that work far better.
How to Choose the Right CAD Software for Your Project
A simple way to decide: if you are designing a mechanical product for mass manufacturing, SolidWorks is the safest bet. If you need a functional prototype quickly and affordably, Fusion 360 covers the full path from model to 3D print. If your project is flat — panels, signage, templates, laser-cut parts — AutoCAD or any strong 2D drafting tool is the right fit.
File compatibility matters more than brand loyalty. Neutral formats like STEP and IGES move between all three platforms, so a good designer can hand off usable files no matter what software your manufacturer runs.
