Vector vs. Raster: The First Decision in Laser File Preparation

Laser machines think about your artwork in two ways. Vector paths are mathematical lines the laser follows, like a pen tracing a route. Raster images are grids of pixels the laser burns row by row, much like an inkjet printer lays down ink. Cutting and scoring require vector paths. Engraving a photo, a logo fill, or shaded artwork uses raster data.

If you want a shape cut out of acrylic or wood, we need a vector outline of that shape. If you send a JPEG of the shape instead, someone has to redraw it as a vector before the machine can cut it, which adds time and cost. For engraved fills and photographs, a high-resolution raster file works fine, and often better.

The Best File Types for Laser Engraving and Cutting

For vector work, we prefer AI (Adobe Illustrator), SVG, DXF, EPS, or vector PDF files. These preserve clean, scalable paths the laser can follow exactly. For raster engraving, send a PNG or TIFF at 300 DPI or higher at the actual size you want engraved. A 500-pixel logo pulled from a website will look blurry engraved at six inches wide, because the laser faithfully reproduces every jagged pixel.

Design Tips That Make Laser Engraving Look Its Best

Convert text to outlines before sending vector files. If you leave live fonts in the file and we do not have that exact typeface installed, your text can silently swap to a different font. Outlining the text locks the letterforms in place.

Use pure black and white for engraved areas whenever possible. High contrast gives the laser clear instructions. Grayscale works well for photo engraving, but muddy mid-tones in logos usually engrave unevenly.

Mind minimum feature sizes. Lines thinner than about 0.3 mm and tiny serif text can burn out or fill in, especially on wood and leather, where the laser chars a slightly wider path than the beam itself. When in doubt, make small details a touch bolder.

Account for kerf on cut parts. The beam removes a small amount of material, typically 0.1 to 0.3 mm depending on the material and thickness. For decorative work this rarely matters, but for parts that need to fit together, such as box joints or inlays, kerf compensation is essential. The ones we see most often: logos copied from websites at screen resolution, JPEG compression artifacts that engrave as visible noise, hairline strokes meant as cut lines that disappear when the file is opened in another program, and files built in RGB color with dozens of stray layers. None of these are fatal. They simply add prep time, and a clean, organized file gets your job on the machine faster and keeps the cost down.
