If you’re trying to figure out how much 3D scanning costs, you’ve probably seen answers ranging from under a hundred dollars to several thousand — and frustratingly, both can be right. 3D scanning cost depends on the size of the object, the accuracy you need, and what you want delivered at the end: a raw scan file or a fully rebuilt CAD model. After more than two decades of scanning parts at our Glendale studio, we’ve learned that most sticker shock comes from not knowing which of those factors applies to your project. What Determines 3D Scanning Cost?
Four factors drive nearly every quote we prepare.
Size and geometry. A small bracket that fits in your hand scans in minutes. A car bumper, a sculpture, or a full engine block takes multiple setups, alignment work, and more processing time.
Surface condition. Shiny, dark, or transparent surfaces scatter or absorb light, so they usually need a temporary matte spray before scanning. It’s a quick step, but it adds prep time to the job.
Accuracy requirements. Capturing a part for visual reference is one thing; capturing it within a few hundredths of a millimeter for inspection or tooling is another. Tighter tolerances mean more careful setups and more verification.

Typical 3D Scanning Cost Ranges
Every shop prices a little differently, but these general ranges hold for most service providers:
Small parts (hand-sized or smaller) usually run about $100–$300 for a clean, watertight mesh. Medium objects — think housings, helmets, automotive components — typically land in the $250–$700 range. Large or highly complex items are often quoted hourly, commonly $100–$200 per hour, because setup and alignment time varies so much from piece to piece.
Multi-part jobs almost always cost less per part than one-off scans, since setup and calibration are shared across the batch.
Scan File vs. CAD Model: The Deliverable Changes the Price
A scanner produces a mesh — millions of tiny triangles describing the surface (usually an STL or OBJ file). If you just need to 3D print a replica, archive a shape, or compare a part against its original design, that mesh may be all you need, and it keeps your cost at the lower end.
But a mesh is not an editable CAD model. If you want to modify the design, produce engineering drawings, or manufacture the part with conventional tooling, the scan must be reverse-engineered into a parametric model (STEP, IGES, or native SolidWorks). That’s skilled modeling work, and it often costs more than the scanning itself — commonly a few hundred dollars for simple parts and more for complex assemblies. How the Scanning Technology Affects Price
We choose the technology based on the part, and it influences the bottom line. Structured light scanning is fast and highly accurate for small and mid-sized parts, which keeps labor time down. Laser scanning handles larger objects and difficult environments well. Photogrammetry — building geometry from photographs — is economical for large objects and full-color capture where fine dimensional accuracy is less critical. How to Keep Your Scanning Costs Down
A few practical tips from our side of the counter: batch several parts into one order so setup costs are shared; clean parts of grease and debris before drop-off; ask for only the accuracy your application requires; and be clear about your end goal — inspection, reproduction, or redesign — so you don’t pay for a CAD rebuild you don’t need.
