A custom engagement ring design lives or dies on the decisions made before anyone opens CAD software. We build rings in Glendale for clients all over Los Angeles, and the projects that go smoothly are almost always the ones where the basics were settled up front. The projects that stall are the ones where the center stone changed three weeks in.

Here is what we ask about at the start, and why each answer shapes the model.

Start With the Center Stone, Not the Style

Everything in the head of the ring is built around the center stone, so we need its exact measurements before modeling begins. A 1.5 ct round brilliant and a 1.5 ct oval have completely different footprints, and a seat cut for one will not hold the other.

If you already own the stone, send us the millimeter dimensions from the grading report – length, width, and depth – plus the shape and the culet condition. If you are still shopping, pick the shape and a target size range and we will model to nominal dimensions, then adjust the seat once the actual stone is in hand. That second pass is normal and quick, but it is far cheaper than rebuilding a finished model.

Fancy shapes deserve extra attention. Ovals, pears, and marquises vary a lot stone to stone even at the same carat weight, so we treat those measurements as non-negotiable inputs rather than estimates.

Decide the Metal Before We Set Wall Thicknesses

Metal choice is not just a color decision. Platinum, 14k gold, 18k gold, and silver behave differently in casting and in daily wear, and good jewelry CAD accounts for that.

Platinum is dense and forgiving on prongs, so it tolerates finer prong tips and thinner galleries. 14k gold is harder than 18k and holds detail well, but springier alloys need slightly heavier prong stock. Silver is soft enough that delicate shanks will bend over time, so we thicken them. Because platinum is much denser than gold, the same model costs noticeably more to cast in platinum than in 18k, which is worth knowing before you approve a chunky design.

Metal also affects shrinkage. Different alloys shrink at different rates from wax to finished casting, and we scale the model accordingly. Changing the metal after the model is approved usually means revisiting those numbers.

Settle the Setting Style and Finger Size

Prong, bezel, halo, pave, channel, and tension settings each carry their own modeling requirements. Pave and micro-pave need accurate melee sizes and seat spacing, and a shared-prong band has to be laid out around your actual finger size. A pave pattern that looks even on a size 5 will not distribute the same way on a size 8.

We also want to know about wedding band stacking early. If the engagement ring will sit flush against a band, the profile of the shank and the height of the gallery need to accommodate that from the beginning rather than being ground down later.

Finally, tell us how the ring will be worn. A low-profile bezel or a protected halo makes sense for someone working with their hands. A tall cathedral setting is beautiful and catches on gloves and sweaters.

What Happens After the CAD Model Is Approved

Once the CAD model is signed off, we print it in castable resin or wax, invest it, and cast in your chosen metal. It is the same lost-wax process jewelers have used for centuries, just with a far more accurate pattern. From there the piece goes to finishing and stone setting. We can also 3D print a resin try-on model first so you can put the shape on a finger before committing to metal, which is a small expense that has saved plenty of clients from a design they would have regretted.

Expect a few rounds of revisions on the CAD render. That is the point of modeling digitally: changing a prong height or a shank taper on screen costs a few minutes, while changing it on a cast ring costs a recast.
