Common Uses for Laser-Cut Stencils
- Signage and branding: logos and lettering painted on walls, windows, vehicles, and floors.
- Murals and art: multi-layer stencils for street art, decorative painting, and textiles.
- Industrial marking: part numbers, warning text, and equipment labels painted on machinery and crates.
- Cake and food decorating: food-safe stencils for powdered sugar, cocoa, and icing (using appropriate materials).
- Layout templates: drilling guides, router templates, and tracing templates for woodworking and fabrication.
- Crafts and education: reusable shapes for classrooms and craft projects.
Choosing a Stencil Material
Mylar and polyester film
Thin, flexible, and durable, Mylar is the classic stencil material. It can be cleaned and reused many times and bends to fit curved surfaces.
Acrylic
Rigid acrylic templates are ideal for tracing, router templates, and guides that need to hold their shape.
Plywood and MDF
Wood templates are inexpensive and sturdy, making them good for large-format templates and woodworking guides.
Cardstock and chipboard
Economical for short-run or single-use stencils.
Adhesive-backed vinyl and masking
For one-time applications where crisp edges and no paint bleed are essential.
Bridges: The Key to Stencil Design
Letters and shapes with enclosed areas, such as the centers of A, B, O, and R, would fall out if cut as-is. Stencils use small connecting strips called bridges to hold those islands in place. Good bridge design keeps the stencil strong while staying visually unobtrusive. Stencil-style fonts already include bridges, or our designers can add them to your custom artwork.
Design Tips
- Mind the minimum feature size. Very thin lines or tiny letters may tear or not paint cleanly, especially in thin film.
- Keep bridges consistent. Bridges that are too thin break; too wide and they distract from the design.
- Add registration marks. Multi-layer, multi-color stencils need alignment marks or holes so each layer lines up.
- Leave a border. A margin around the design makes the stencil easier to handle and protects surrounding areas from overspray.
- Provide vector artwork. AI, SVG, DXF, or PDF files with clean, closed paths give the best results.
Large-Format Stencils
Large stencils for floors, walls, and vehicles may be cut in sections and assembled on site with alignment marks. Let us know the final size and application method so we can plan sections that are easy to handle.
Pricing and Turnaround
Stencils are priced by material, size, and design complexity. Simple single-layer stencils are quick and affordable. Detailed multi-layer stencils take more design and cutting time. Ordering multiple copies at once lowers the per-piece cost.
