Designing custom earrings in CAD is a little different from designing rings or pendants. Earrings hang from the earlobe, so weight, balance, and the way the piece moves matter just as much as how it looks. At eCadCam, our jewelry services team designs and prepares earrings for jewelers, designers, and brands across Los Angeles. Here are the key decisions that make custom earrings comfortable and wearable.

Choose the Earring Style First

The style determines how the earring attaches and how it carries weight:

Weight: The Most Important Comfort Factor

Earrings that look beautiful in a render can feel heavy after an hour of wear. Because CAD calculates volume precisely, we can estimate metal weight before casting and adjust the design. Common techniques to reduce weight include:

Remember that the same model weighs more in gold or platinum than in silver, so metal choice affects comfort as well as cost.

Balance and Orientation

A drop earring should hang straight and face forward. If the weight is off-center, the earring will twist or tilt. In CAD we position the hanging point above the center of mass and test how the piece will orient. For studs, a large front piece on a single post can droop forward, so we may add a support, use a larger backing, or move the post higher on the design.

Posts, Backings, and Findings

Posts

Posts must be strong enough not to bend and the right diameter for a standard piercing. Many jewelers solder on pre-made posts after casting for strength, while others cast them as part of the design. We plan for whichever method your workflow uses.

Backings

Friction backs (butterflies), screw backs, and larger “disc” backs each have tradeoffs. Screw backs add security for valuable stones. Large backs help support heavier studs.

Hooks, leverbacks, and hinges

Drop earrings may hang from French hooks, leverbacks, or hinged hoops. Hinged hoops and huggies require precise CAD tolerances so the hinge and latch work smoothly after casting and finishing.

Stone Settings in Earrings

Earrings often feature stones, from a single diamond stud to pavé hoops. Settings must be sized correctly, and prongs need enough metal to survive setting and everyday wear. For pairs, we model one earring and mirror it so the pair matches exactly, which is a major advantage of CAD.

Prototyping Before Casting

Because comfort is so personal, we often recommend a resin prototype to try on before committing to precious metal. It reveals size, proportion, and how the earring sits on the ear. Adjustments at this stage are fast and inexpensive.

Production: One-Offs and Collections

For one-of-a-kind earrings, we print the approved model in castable resin or wax for lost-wax casting. For collections, the same CAD files can produce consistent pieces across multiple sizes and metals, and molds can be made for repeated production.
