Second, easy variations: once the master model exists, resizing it, swapping a stone size, or creating a matching band is a fraction of the original modeling work. From Wax Print to Cast Metal: How Small-Batch Jewelry Production Works
Once a design is approved, the workflow for each production run looks like this. We 3D print the model in castable wax or castable resin at very fine layer resolution, so filigree, pavé seats, and crisp edges survive the trip to metal. The printed patterns go onto a wax tree, get invested in plaster, and are burned out to leave a cavity. Molten metal — silver, gold, brass, or bronze — fills that cavity, and after quenching each piece is cut off the tree, cleaned up, and finished.
Because printed patterns replace hand-carved waxes, batch size is flexible. Need three samples for a trunk show? Print three patterns. Sold out and need twenty more? Print twenty. You pay per piece, not per mold, which keeps early inventory risk low. For designs that settle into steady sellers, we can also cut a rubber or silicone mold from a cast master so repeat waxes cost even less.
Budgeting Your First Collection
For planning purposes, most designers should expect three cost buckets: one-time CAD modeling per design, per-piece printing and casting (often in the tens of dollars for silver pieces, more for gold by weight), and finishing work such as polishing, stone setting, or plating. Prototyping a design in silver before committing to gold is a common and inexpensive way to test fit, weight, and look. A five-design collection sampled in sterling silver is typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars all-in — far less than traditional manufacturing minimums.
