What Determines 3D Printing Turnaround Time
Four factors drive how long your job takes.
Machine time is the obvious one. A palm-sized FDM part might print in 3-6 hours, while a full build plate of SLS parts can run 12-24 hours plus cooldown. Print time scales with height and volume, not just overall size – a tall, thin part often takes longer than a short, wide one.
Queue position matters just as much. Every shop schedules jobs around machines that are already running. A quiet week can mean same-day starts; a busy one can add a day or two before your file ever hits a printer.
Post-processing is the step most people forget. Support removal, washing and UV curing (SLA), depowdering (SLS and MJF), sanding, dyeing, or painting each add hours to days.
Finally, file readiness. A watertight, correctly scaled STL or STEP file goes straight to the queue. A file that needs repair, wall-thickness fixes, or design clarification adds a review cycle before printing starts.
Typical 3D Printing Turnaround by Technology
Here’s what we generally see for a single mid-sized part, from approved file to ready-for-pickup:
FDM is usually the fastest and most affordable: 1-2 business days for most parts, and same-day is often possible for small, simple geometries.
SLA resin printing typically runs 1-3 business days. The print itself is quick, but washing, curing, and careful support removal add time – especially for fine-detail parts.
SLS and MJF nylon parts usually take 3-5 business days. These machines print in batches, and the build must cool before parts can be depowdered, so jobs wait for a full build cycle.
PolyJet multi-material prints generally land in the 2-4 business day range depending on complexity and finish requirements.
DMLS metal printing is the longest at roughly 1-2 weeks. Metal builds run slowly, and parts need heat treatment, support removal, and often CNC finishing afterward.
Quantity shifts all of these. Ten small FDM parts might still ship in two days; five hundred SLS parts could book a machine for a week.

For a typical prototype order at our Glendale shop, the sequence looks like this: quoting and file review the same or next business day, printing per the technology times above, post-processing from a few hours to two days depending on finish, and then pickup or local delivery. Los Angeles customers often save a shipping day simply by picking parts up.
Rush service is real, not a myth – most shops, ours included, can bump a job to the front of the queue for a fee when a machine is available. If you have a hard deadline like a trade show, an investor demo, or a film production date, say so up front. It changes which technology we recommend.
How to Get Your Parts Faster
A few habits consistently shave days off a 3D printing order. Send print-ready files (STL, STEP, or 3MF) that are watertight and correctly scaled. Choose the technology to fit the deadline – FDM or SLA when speed matters most. Accept standard finishes on early prototypes and save paint and polish for the final version. Approve quotes quickly, because the clock starts at approval, not at inquiry. And when you can, split the order: print the one part you need tomorrow on a fast process while the rest runs on the ideal one.
