The honest answer is that a CAD project timeline depends on complexity, how well-defined your idea is, and how many revision rounds you need. Still, after 22+ years of running product design work out of our Glendale shop, we can give you realistic ranges. Most projects we handle move from first conversation to manufacturing-ready files in two to eight weeks.

Below is how that time actually gets spent, and what makes a project fast or slow.

What a Typical Product Design Timeline Looks Like

Product design is not one task. It is a sequence, and each stage has its own clock.

Discovery and requirements (1–5 days)

Before anyone opens SolidWorks, we need to know what the part has to do. What loads does it see? What does it mate with? What is the target manufacturing process and volume? Clients who arrive with sketches, reference samples, or an existing part to measure compress this stage to a single conversation. Clients still deciding what the product is will spend longer here — and that is time well spent, because requirements that change after modeling starts are the single biggest cause of schedule slip.

Concept modeling (3 days–2 weeks)

This is the first real CAD work: rough geometry, overall proportions, and how the pieces fit together. A simple single-part bracket or enclosure lid might take a couple of days. A multi-part assembly with moving components, tight packaging, or ergonomic surfacing runs one to two weeks. We usually deliver renderings or a lightweight 3D view at this point so you can react before detail work begins.

Detailed CAD and design for manufacturing (1–3 weeks)

Here the model gets real: wall thicknesses, draft angles, fillets, fastener locations, tolerances, and clearances all get resolved against the manufacturing method you have chosen. Designing for injection molding takes longer than designing for CNC or 3D printing because mold constraints touch nearly every surface. This is also where we catch the problems that would otherwise show up as expensive tooling changes later.

Prototyping and revision (1–2 weeks per round)

Most products need at least one physical prototype. We print or machine the part, you hold it, and you find the things nobody sees on a screen — a grip that feels wrong, a cable that will not route, a lid that needs another millimeter. Each round of print, evaluate, and revise typically takes one to two weeks. Budget for two rounds on a straightforward part and three or more on anything that touches a human hand.

Manufacturing file release (2–5 days)

The last step is packaging everything a manufacturer needs: STEP files, 2D drawings with dimensions and tolerances, a bill of materials, and material and finish callouts. It is short, but skipping it is why so many projects stall at the quoting stage.

What Makes a CAD Project Faster or Slower

Several factors move a product design timeline more than anything else.

Clarity of the brief. A client who knows the target manufacturing process, rough dimensions, and must-have features can cut weeks off the schedule. Vague briefs produce concepts that get rejected, and rejected concepts are re-done concepts.

Part count. Timelines scale with assemblies, not with size. A large simple housing is faster than a small ten-piece mechanism.

Manufacturing method. 3D printed and CNC parts tolerate design decisions that injection molding will not. If you are tooling up, expect more time in detailed design.

Reference geometry. If your part has to fit an existing object, 3D scanning it is far faster and more accurate than measuring by hand, and it removes an entire category of fit problems.

Revision discipline. Batched feedback moves fast. Feedback that arrives one comment at a time over two weeks turns a three-day revision into a three-week one.

How to Compress Your Product Design Timeline

Bring physical samples or reference products to the first meeting. Decide your manufacturing process early, even provisionally. Consolidate feedback into a single list per round rather than sending it piecemeal. And be honest about which features are requirements versus preferences — half of all schedule overruns come from re-litigating decisions that were already made.
