Why Tooling Costs Change Everything
An injection mold for even a simple part typically runs $3,000–$10,000, and complex multi-cavity tools can climb well past $50,000. That cost has to be spread across every part you make. If you’re producing 100,000 units, tooling adds pennies per part. If you’re producing 500 units, it can add $10–$20 per part before you’ve paid for any plastic.
3D printing has no tooling. The first part costs roughly the same as the hundredth. That’s why there’s almost always a crossover quantity — below it, printing is cheaper; above it, molding wins. For most small-to-medium parts, that crossover lands somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand units, depending on part size, material, and technology.
Which 3D Printing Technologies Work for Production Parts
Not every printing process is production-ready. These are the ones we rely on for end-use parts:
SLS and MJF for Functional Nylon Parts
Selective laser sintering (SLS) and Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) produce tough nylon parts with consistent mechanical properties and no support structures. They’re the workhorses of low-volume production — think enclosures, brackets, clips, ducting, and housings. Parts nest tightly in the build chamber, so per-part cost drops meaningfully at quantity.
SLA for Fine Detail and Smooth Surfaces
Stereolithography (SLA) delivers smooth surfaces and crisp detail, which makes it a good fit for consumer-facing housings, fixtures, and parts that need a polished look. Engineering resins now cover rigid, tough, flexible, and high-temperature needs.
DMLS for Metal Without Machining Setups
For metal parts in stainless steel, aluminum, or titanium, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) can produce geometries that would be expensive or impossible to machine — and again, with no tooling investment.
When Injection Molding Still Wins
We’re a 3D printing shop, but we’ll tell you straight when molding is the better answer. Choose injection molding when you need very high quantities (typically 5,000+ of the same part), when per-part cost at scale matters more than time to market, when you need specific molded-in textures or certified resins only available as molding grades, or when your part geometry is simple and high-volume demand is proven.
Many of our clients actually use both: they launch with 3D printed parts to get to market fast and validate demand, then transition to molding once volumes justify the tooling. Printing also lets you keep improving the design between batches — something a steel mold makes painful and expensive.
